Chapter 2
I knocked on the door. It was opened by a tall scientist in a coat that looked too small. He smiled, “hello Omega! Some nice scientists from Birmingham are here. Where is Birmingham, Omega?” he knew the answer and so did I. “Birmingham is a city in England, which is also known as the United Kingdom. This can be found in north-eastern Europe.” I recited. He took my hand, “good! Now come sit on the examination chair, please!” I sat down. I sat up straight, kept my knees together and put my hands in my lap. He was satisfied with the way I sat, as were the rest of the scientists. I could tell that the English scientists were not comfortable here. They were confused. I confused them. The man whose name tag said ‘Jeremy’ turned to the smiling scientist. “This is Omega? Your finest achievement? She is only a small girl!” The other scientist, I knew. Her name was Julia and she was the one who check if we were all in our beds at night. She tuned to me, “Omega. Tell the gentleman why you could not come earlier.” I looked as Jeremy, “I had to make sure that the others followed the morning routine. That is one of the rules. The rules are rules. We must follow the rules.” He looked puzzled. He was puzzled. I could feel it. “but do they listen? You are much smaller than most of them, right?” I nodded, “they are much bigger than me, but they are afraid. I can feel it. They do not want to be punished by me. They follow the rules because I say. I tell them, ‘rules are rules. We must follow the rules.” “But why are they afraid? You could not do much to someone twice the size as you!” the other man asked. He was more confused than Jeremy. “They know that I could destroy them. They have seen me terminate many others and they do not want to meet the same fate.” “How old are you, omega?” “1850 days old, sir.” “And how many years is that?” “5 years and 25 days, sir.” “how old is the oldest in your room?” “15, sir” They were amazed. They looked at each other and nodded. They began to talk to Julia and the other scientist, Michael. After approximately 10 minutes, the turned towards me again. Michael said, “omega, show us how fast you can do 100 push ups.” I did them in less than a minute. “Now give me your arm.” I did. He pulled a pocket knife out of his pocket. He pressed it hard against my skin, until he hit a vain. Blood pulsed out, making a puddle on the floor. “Did you feel that, Omega?” I shook my head. Is it hurting now, Omega?” I shook my head again. They talked for another ten minutes. They turned to me again. “Remove your shirt and show them your wings, Omega.” I considered just pushing up the back of my shirt, but that was wrong. It was not what I was told to do. The rules are rules. We must follow rules. I took off my shirt and turned around. My wings unfolded. The other scientists felt my wings, tugged on feathers, felt bones, moving feathers to see joints. Julia was happy, “You may put your shirt back on, Omega. Please change into your flying clothes and meet us in the wind tunnel.” I went to my room and took my flying clothes out from under my cot. I put them on and walked to the wind tunnel.
