His golden brown eyes looked me directly in the eye, which he rarely does with anyone else. His brown hair was in need of a serious haircut and covered his eyes. His smile was quick, but I caught it and beamed back at him. His cheeks reddened and he looked down, “This is an awfully large tree. What happens if we fall?”
“Raaaa!” Sage leaped out of no where and landed nimbly on the branch a little higher than Drake, “We die. That’s what happens.” I saw Jase grip the branch a bit tighter. I sighed.
“Come on, Sage. Lighten up. Let’s not get each other freaked out when we’re all the way up here. There is no turning back now, guys!” I said as Sage grabbed a hold of a branch and did a flip, “SAGE! What on earth are you doing?! We are nearly thirty feet off the ground!” She shrugged her shoulders and stood between me and Jase.
She was the rebel of the group. She was also my twin sister. We were almost perfectly identical. The only difference between her and me was our eye color, oh, and the fact that she had gotten her flaming red hair cut seriously short and layered two days ago. (She had tried to dye it different colors, but thankfully our mom wouldn’t let her).
Every time she was around, everyone seemed happy. She was the cheery, peace-keeping one who spread good cheer and happiness to the world. At the same time she was an outspoken girl who loved rock music with such a passion that it occasionally got her in trouble with our mother and step-father. Sometimes, she landed herself in detention or spoke out of turn, but she hardly ever lied and no one ever stayed mad at her long.
I was just the quiet and creative twin who often stood in the background of almost every situation. I ran under pressure and hated confrontation of any kind. But I loved my sister and could never stay jealous of her long. I looked down again and tried to pick Bracken out of the leaves below us four.
“Bracken? Did you fall or what?” Sage peered over the branch with me. Soon, eight eyes were looking down into Bracken’s clear blue ones. He was a lot further down.
“I’m good! I’m, uh, just going to sit here,” He paused, “Could we do something else, now? Or could you guys come down here? I can’t climb up.” I sighed. We were lucky we had even gotten him into the tree in the first place.
“All right, Bracken, down we come. You might want to move, though.” We watched him as he shifted his weight onto yet a lower branch and jump down. He was the tallest in the group and probably the kindest. Of the five of us, he was definitely the smartest, and he certainly did not climb trees for fun.
“You are a sissy.” Drake drawled as we jumped down beside Bracken.
“Play nice, people.” Sage grinned. I smiled at her and playfully pushed her, “Oh no you did not just do that!” She laughed and started to chase me. Jase and Bracken watched, laughing, and decided to join. Drake rolled his eyes and went to walk away, but ran into someone instead. The girl stumbled back into her two friends, who, in my opinion, acted more like body guards.
I stopped running and Sage ran into me nearly knocking us to the ground. Jase and Bracken froze and stared wide-eyed at our unexpected guests. All three of them stared down at Drake, glaring fiercely. Each of them had ice cold blue eyes and long hair that was usually pinned back the same way, but not today. The oldest of the group, Hailey, had her blonde hair down and it flowed gently in the breeze.
